Anecdote
Until the 1990s, generations of sheep slept in the sheepfold, which has now been converted into a comfortable holiday apartment. Many of them undoubtedly participated in transhumance to reach greener pastures at higher altitudes from May to October. Some of them probably reunited with their counterparts from the Aix-en-Provence region. Since the Middle Ages, the Digne territory has been a place of passage for herds, as it is the transition between the plain and the mountains, between Provence and the Alps. Shepherds gathered their flocks, which could number up to 50,000 sheeps. The summer grazing of sheep still occurs today, and if you walk in the nearby alpine pastures, you may come across a much smaller flock, well guarded by a Patou dog.
Description
Located in an agricultural building with thick stone walls, the sheepfold of the castle opened onto the meadow of the domain of the lords of yesteryear and just above it was the barn to store hay to feed the animals. during the harsh winter months. Where sheep and lambs rested just a quarter of a century ago, you will now stay in this two-person holiday apartment, sheltered by the large ceiling beams, remarkable for their size, preserved as vestiges of this bygone era.
When you enter in “La Bergerie”, you will discover that the 45m2 of this ground-floor accommodation has entered the present with a rather modern style of decoration.
A large kitchen open to the living-dining room awaits you, where you can cook while chatting with your guests on the sofa. Will you have lunch inside at the large table or outside on your private terrace ?
For your nights, a sleek and zen bedroom furnished with a double bed awaits you, along with the adjacent bathroom equipped with a bathtub.
Outside you will only have a few steps to take to cross the arch and enter the castle courtyard…
Relax in the shade of the two old leafy trees and admire the beautifully restored Provençal farmhouse, "Le Château". Barbecues are available for you in the courtyard or garden for wood-fired grilling. As you slip between the old sheepfold and the castle, you go up towards the road on this alley named in the region “calade" and arrive facing the "Robine", a singular hill of black marl, at the foot of which there is a volleyball or pétanque court, as you please. A parking lot is available right next to it to park your vehicle.
From your place of residence, you may want to enjoy the benefits of the hot waters of the Thermes de Digne-les-Bains, visit the Gassendi Museum or the house of the adventurer Alexandra David-Néel, explore the paths of the “Musée promenade” set up by the UNESCO Geopark of Haute-Provence. That is only at a 20-minute drive away.
The location is also at the center of all the remarkable sites of Provence, within a maximum of 2 hours by car, such as Marseille, the Sainte-Victoire mountain near Aix-en-Provence or the Lure mountain overlooking the Durance Valley, the famous Verdon Gorge and Lake Sainte-Croix, the famous lavender fields around Valensole, and the list goes on. You will be happy to return to your apartment in La Robine-sur-Galabre in the evening, away from the crowds and noise.
